Can Americans visit “Baja” as tourists?

Some restrictions after the coronavirus outbreak are travel related ones

Following the crisis caused by the new coronavirus, non-essential activities have been restricted, so tourism has declined throughout the country following restrictions to prevent further coronavirus infections.

One of the most affected by tourism is travel, which prohibits people from making trips abroad because they are considered non-essential 'vacations'. These restrictions are still in place almost everywhere in the world and have impacted the most, because Mexicans can not cross to the United States.

Now, with this restriction, thousands of questions have arisen about whether Americans can travel to Mexico and especially if they can vacation on its beautiful beaches such as those of the Baja California Peninsula. Since March 21 the restrictions between Mexico and the States continue and now until September 2020. The U.S. State Department lifted its global coronavirus travel warning in early August, assigning a Level 4 warning: Do not travel to any part of Mexico.

So...Can Americans visit "Baja"? Here's what you should know.

  • Americans can still cross the border and reach the airports of Baja California and Baja California Sur, even tourist airports.
  • When visiting Baja California they are not asking you to be quarantined.
  • It is warned that there are almost no flights and these tend to change hours constantly.
  • When arriving at the Baja California airports they will take your temperature, they do not ask for quarantine here at the moment of arrival.
  • The hotels at the moment only allow to operate with 30% of their maximum capacity.
  • If you plan to make your visit through Calexico, you should keep in mind that on weekends they install sanitary filters to ensure that people enter the city of Mexicali for essential purposes.
  • Restaurants operate with a maximum capacity of 30% and it is recommended to make reservations to ensure a spot.

The use of face masks is mandatory when entering shops and restaurants.
These are some of the points you should consider on your next visit to Baja California or Baja California Sur. Remember not to travel if you have any coronavirus symptoms!
